creative playfulness

OR PLAYFUL CREATIVENESS, with no attached agenda, often gives me my best concepts. I haven't worked at a design job per se for several weeks, but I'm pursuing my own ideas for a book proposal and a small gallery. This is my little bumper sticker I had fun making last night.

run like a girl

FOR A BOOK written by gifted life-coach, Kathy Vick. The book uses a scrapbook concept, includes inspirational quotes and womens' stories of growing-up and how to capture that essence of running 'like a girl' everyday.

a book by its cover

THANKS TO LOUISE Fili and Chip Kidd, bookcovers are more fun to design now. These designers and Paul Rand were some who helped break down the walls around what made a compelling cover.

photoshoppin'

A FAVE PROJECT is my tarot cards. The archetypes offer layers I use to
make collaged stories. Then, printing them on cards is my idea of perfection, combining the tactile pleasure of heavy paper with digital illustration.
As a designer, I relate to HERMIT. Follow your own illumination, seek solitude, and other aspects of an artist's life.

when eggs create

I HAVE A TWIN. She's my identical twin. She writes, I design, and we chose to have an identity for our projects. ZYGO was born of the mono-zygotic idea of 2 beings in one egg. Two times the thinking, and all that. I like the logo I conceived, because it's modern and still gives a nod to the egg idea.

environments in store

WIZARDS OF THE COAST opened
up retail stores everywhere. I designed
and art directed one of the unique stores, with
a more cyber twist. It featured networked
game stations and all the stuff that
was made with the online gamer in mind.
So this store had a futuristic twist, and I
retooled the company logo and colors to
get the look.

environments in store 2.0

WORKING FOR the same company,
an entire retail store chain features all
the products and games in a generic,
colorful, toy-like setting. I designed
murals featuring artwork from trading
cards, and wayfinding signage and
banners for each section.

working with wine

AS DESIGN DIRECTOR for Ste Michelle Estates, I gained tremendous appreciation for the label, where there is precious little space to tell a story. And you need decision makers who understand that. These samples are respectable, but I'd love to work with progressive vintners who know how visually sophisticated buyers are.

toyz r me

STILL A KID. I love to collect toys and make them. Intrigued by kara, dolls and toys from Japan, or inspired by great artists like Hiyao Miyazaki, I often sketch out my own worlds and develop concepts for kids books. Left: skelly jack-in-the-box that was auctioned for $500. Right: parts of an art doll still in process.

going to the dogs

MY SISTER AND I collaborate whenever we can. She's a brilliant writer, and our concepting powers often yield successful results. We started a line of cards and gifts for pet owners, telling their stories in vintage photo settings. The art is accompanied by a whimsical, semi-biographical yarn.

setting the tone

A CALENDAR, based on the illustrations from the popular PRACTICAL GUIDES series of books. Wizards, faeries, dragons, etc. had to be combined in an artful way to show off the line of books. I pulled them together in a playful but elegant manner. Also shown: an activity book which complemented the calendar.

ephemera-inspired

VINTAGE PRINTS always capture my heart. I search out cards and books, fountain-penned ledgers, gorgeous old illustrations from Charles Dana Gibson, J.C.Leyendecker, Arthur Rackham, N.C. Wyeth and others. These designs are inspired by ephem-era.

girls playing games

DEVELOPING A GAME for girls in the male-saturated game market is a feat. Tons of research went into concepting this TCG with a social strategy. The tween market is lucrative, and many companies want part of their income. Working with illustrator Michiko Stehrenberger to develop the look of the game was a highlight. Other illustrators were used for the final products, but working up ideas with Michiko gave it a sassy tone. Card templates, packaging and advertising shown.

inventing worlds

...OR IN THIS case, researching ancient ones to develop a symbol system and artifacts based on the Norsemen. These samples show the first stages of creating a game, and as many ideas as I could get on paper.
